All You Need to Know About Swollen Feet During Pregnancy

One of the many pregnancy symptoms that may come to pass is the swelling in your feet, hands or face. Don’t worry, this is normal. If you are suffering from swellings during pregnancy, read on to find out more about why and when they occur and how to reduce the effects.

How do swollen feet occur?

Pregnancy swelling is also known as edema. When you are pregnant your body tends to retain more water. Excess fluid is collected in the tissue. The changes in your blood chemistry also leads to fluid shifting to the tissue. This causes swelling.

Furthermore, as your pregnancy progresses and your uterus gets bigger, it exerts pressure on the pelvic veins and the vena cava. This pressure results in the return of the blood from your feet to get slower, causing it to pool. This fluid is forced from the veins into the tissues in your feet and ankles.

When does it occur?

Edema is one of the third trimester symptoms that you will face. It tends to be worse towards the end of the day and in summer. For women who are pregnant with more than one baby or who have excess amniotic fluid, the swelling may be more severe.

However, there usually shouldn’t be any cause for worry.

For how long will the swelling stay?

Pregnancy swelling tends to disappear once you have delivered your baby and the excess fluid has left your body.

When should I contact my doctor about this?

Contact your doctor if the swelling in your face and hands is excessive and you experience sudden weight gain of more than 2 lb within 24 hours accompanied by high-blood pressure while in your third trimester. This may be a sign of preeclampsia.

If you feel that the swelling in one leg is more than the swelling in the other and this is accompanied by tenderness or pain in your thigh or calf, do call your doctor as this may signal a blood clot.

What can I do to reduce the amount of swelling?

Here are some tips and home remedies you may use to reduce the intensity of swollen feet during pregnancy:

  • Lie on your side to relieve the pressure on your veins.
  • Use a stool to keep your feet up. This reduces the amount of blood that pools in your feet.
  • Don’t keep your feet in one position for long. Take regular breaks from sitting or standing. Stretch or take a walk.
  • Don’t wear pants, socks, or stockings that are tight around the ankle or calf.
  • If you have to go out, wear comfortable shoes that will fit nicely even if your feet swell up.
  • Eat well, avoid junk food, and drink enough water. Drinking water helps your body retain fewer fluids.
